Craig Newmark Bio, Founder of Craigslist

Craig Newmark, born December 6, 1952 in Morristown, New Jersey, created Craigslist in 1995. A Case Western Reserve University graduate in computer science, Newmark had moved to San Francisco after college. Operated as a mailing list in its early days, Craigslist was first used as a way to post notices about local SF events, especially those of interest to computer professionals. Like many internet pioneers, he soon found that his creation was used for purposes he had not imagined -- as when Craigslist subscribers began posting job notices to the list, reasoning that a list read primarily by computer professionals was a good place to advertise work for computer professionals.

Over time, Newmark created various categories for different kinds of posts, and soon created a website to supplant the mailing list. Before long, he was working on the site fulltime, with nine employees. In June of 2000, a Boston Craigslist was added, in addition to the San Francisco original; Chicago, Los Angeles, New York, Portland (OR), San Diego, Seattle, Washington D.C., and Sacramento followed throughout the rest of the year, and in 2008, 450 cities are represented by Craigslist sites, each of which contains user-submitted posts ranging from for sale notices to job postings to housing ads and personals, along with discussion forums. Much of this expansion was the work of Jim Buckmaster, who was hired as Craigslist CEO in 2000.
