Glen Bell Bio, Founder of Taco Bell

A U.S. Marine during World War II, Glen Bell started a hot dog stand in San Bernardino, California, in 1946, after leaving the military at war's end. In 1952, he opened a second stand and started selling tacos out of a side window. When the tacos took off, he opened three taco stands -- Taco Tia -- in the San Bernardino area, and later four El Tacos in partnership with another local restaurateur.

Finally deciding he wanted to own his own chain, he sold his interest in all his restaurants in 1962 and opened Taco Bell, applying what he'd learned in the last sixteen years of fast food service. After two years, the business was doing well enough to franchise, and after only fourteen years, he successfully sold the chain to PepsiCo, which in 1978 acquired and merged with the major "non-burger" fast food chains: Taco Bell, Kentucky Fried Chicken, and Pizza Hut.

Bell retired shortly thereafter, marrying and having five children.
