Jim Casey Bio, Founder of UPS

19 year old Jim Casey, born in Pick Handle Gulch, Nevada, founded the American Messenger Company in Seattle, Washington, in 1907, with his friend Claude Ryan. The messengers were Casey's brother George and their teenage friends, and six years after going into business, they merged with a competitor's company and bought a Model T Ford. While earlier deliveries had been made on foot or by bicycle, they could now fill the car with packages bound for a single neighborhood, deliver everything, and then return to the shipping center with another load for another neighborhood. Motorcycles were added to the delivery fleet as well, and in time they accumulated more and more vehicles, and covered an ever-widening delivery area, eventually renaming the business the United Parcel Service.

In 1930, service began in New York City, followed by other east coast and Midwest cities, and the headquarters shifted to New York as well. A mechanical system was introduced to sort packages, and throughout the 1940s and 50s, various common carrier rights were acquired in order to allow UPS to deliver packages from any address to any other address. As of 1975, they served all 48 contiguous states; it has since become international in scope.
